  3. Energy Efficiency. Alternative Sources of Energy

Energy Efficiency. Alternative Sources of Energy

The course consists of five modules. The main focus is on analysis of main problems, challenges and trends in the global energy sector, dynamics and possible scenarios of its development. The efficiency of various methods of energy generation is debated. The physical and technical fundamentals of wind and solar energy are discussed. The possibility of using autonomous combined energy plants for power supply of remote objects is shown. Two remote labs illustrated the possibilities of different solar technologies support the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course the learner is expected to be able to:

Course structure

Dynamics of the global energy system development

The history of the development of global energy system, the change in its structure as well as a paradigm shift in the energy market is discussed. The classification of the main sources of energy and the assessment of their resources are given.

Efficiency of the global energy system. Problems and challenges

The efficiency of various methods of energy generation is analized. The role and place of Russia in the global energy system is discussed. The concepts of "energy efficiency" and "energy sensitivity" of the economy are debated.

Alternative energy

Physical and technical fundamentals of alternative energy. The analysis of world trends and the potential for the development of alternative energy in Russia are debated.

Autonomous combined energy plants

The autonomous combined energy plants and units and their application in the energy system development are discussed. The key principle of such units and plants is an opportunity to use both alternative energy (solar panels, wind mills) and traditional fossil fuel combustion energy. The autonomous combined energy plants and units are of high demand in territories with the absence of electrical supply but with significant potential capacity of alternative energy sources.

The global energy system in the future

Possible ways of transformation of the global energy system, possible scenarios of its development are debated. Hydrocarbons and renewable energy sources: are they competitors or complementors? Which source of energy will be dominated in the global energy system in XXI century? These and some other questions dealing with transformation of the global energy system in short and long terms are discussed.
